EAT Program 2015

 

The Entrepreneur Access & Training (EAT) Program is designed to give Non-Profit Leaders and Entrepreneurs a step-by-step curriculum for:

  • Determining and reaching the target customer that will generate sales and funding
  • Selecting the products and services that the target customers want and need
  • Creating the Marketing Process necessary to effectively communicate with the target customer
  • Starting your business properly (state and federal paperwork)

WHC interviews Entrepreneurs and shares their responses so that other Business Owners can be inspired on their own entrepreneurial journeys.  Please read Dr. King’s responses and contact her directly for more information.

1. Why did you open your business?
I was often asked to help my “Boomer” coworkers, neighbors, family members, and friends of neighbors/family members, with their computer/techie gadgets. They had been unsuccessful obtaining assistance from their children, younger relatives, product technical support, and/or online guides, and were very frustrated. After expressing their dismay to their friends who knew me and my expertise, I received referral phone calls. Carolyn can you help my friend? Some examples of their requests were: moving pictures from their cameras to their computers, working with email attachments, installing virus protection, backing up their computers, clearing their browser’s history and cookies, and creating Excel spreadsheets to manage budgets.

While assisting them I often discovered that they had taken a computer class and were dissatisfied with the outcome. Their number one complaint was that the class was too diverse (beginners and advanced students), (android, apple, and window based cell phones and computers). This variety disabled their instructors from addressing their individual needs. A second major complaint was that they were too embarrassed to present their questions before the group. Unfortunately, they never got what they needed from their classes, calling it a waste of time and money. I learned of their desire to learn more about computers and technology, but on a more personal level. They always expressed tremendous appreciation for my patience and attention to their unique learning goals. And thus, I opened Boomer Tech Academy so that I could provide this service to the public.

2. What services do you provide?
Boomer Tech Academy provides personalized technology instruction outside the traditional institutional classroom environment. Students submit their areas of interest within a topic beforehand, allowing the session to be tailored to their own learning objectives. Customized hands-on technology training is available on (smartphones, ipads, tablets, personal computers, the Internet, and various software applications) to individuals and small groups in a comfortable, personable, and professional setting. We also offer tailored corporate training.

3. Who are your customers?
Adult learners who desire to enrich their computer and technology skills.

4. What qualifies you to provide these services?
I have had a successful career in public service with 30 years of combined service & experience as a public school educator, computer scientist, and professor for the Department of Defense, several Maryland Universities, and Public Schools. In addition to a state of Maryland Teaching certification, in Science and Mathematics, I hold a B.S. in Education, from Wayne State University, M.E.S. in Computer Science Engineering from Loyola University of Maryland, an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and a Ph.D. in Organization and Management /E-Business Capella University, Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have received multiple letters of appreciation, honors, and awards from community organizations, educational institutions, and the Department of Defense. Additionally, I am an inaugural inductee to Loyola University of Maryland, Computer Science Hall of Fame.

5. What sets your business apart?
Boomer Tech Academy’s unique curriculum is customizable for each student or group. Lessons are intended to be personable, for one on one, or small groups of six or less. Learners’ questions (when provided in advance of the session) become the objectives of their tailored course. Our sessions are hands on enabling the students to learn on their own equipment. Pricing is affordable starting at $25.00 per hour /per person.  Learning sessions usually last two hours. Our corporate training utilizes this same mode of instruction.

6. What’s your mission?
Our goal is to simply – teach those who want to learn. We provide mature learners, “Boomers” a friendly non-stressful professional environment where expert instructors assist them in updating their technology skills. We are devoted to meeting the needs of each of our students.

7. Describe your greatest accomplishments.
We have the continuous support of returning customers seeking more knowledge on updates in technologies.

8. What are your plans for growth?
Partner with community and government based organizations, and expand our course offerings as updated technologies arrive.

Will Holmes Radio

Will Holmes was recently invited to 88.9 WEAA in Baltimore to record a segment discussing “How to be More Successful at Networking.”  Host,  Andrea Garris Jackson was sitting in for Mr. Omar Muhammad.  Mr. Muhammad is the creator and host of Briefcase Radio, a talk show dedicated to helping entrepreneurs grow their businesses.  Ms. Jackson credited Will Holmes as an expert on networking due to the large following in his Baltimore Professionals and Entrepreneurs group and all the successful events that occur each month.

The shows airs from 8pm to 9pm EST on Sunday evenings. Will Holmes’ segment airs between 830pm and 9pm on February 15, 2015. Will Holmes truly appreciates the opportunity to be on Briefcase Radio and looks forward to another invite.  (Please let WEAA know that you want to hear Will Holmes again!)
